Colorado Driver Handbook
Applicants must meet identity, residency, vision, and testing requirements. Permit holders must follow age and supervised-driving rules; minor drivers are subject to graduated licensing.
- Carry a valid license or permit when driving.
- Update your address as required by the DMV.
- Passenger and nighttime limits may apply to minor drivers.
Signs & Markings
Sign shape and color reveal purpose: an octagon means stop, an inverted triangle means yield, a circle usually warns of a railroad crossing, and diamonds generally warn of hazards.
- Yellow lines separate opposing traffic; white lines separate same-direction traffic.
- Broken lines permit crossing when safe; solid lines generally restrict it.
- Obey orange work-zone signs and flaggers.
Signals & Right of Way
A green light never removes the duty to look. Before proceeding or turning, confirm the intersection is clear and yield to vehicles, bicyclists, and pedestrians with lawful priority.
- Flashing red means stop; flashing yellow means slow and proceed cautiously.
- Right on red requires a complete stop and no prohibiting sign.
- Yield to traffic already circulating in a roundabout.
Speed, Space & Lane Changes
The posted limit is the maximum legal speed under good conditions; slow further for weather, visibility, or traffic. Keep at least a three-second following interval in normal conditions.
- Signal, check mirrors, and look over your shoulder before changing lanes.
- Avoid lingering beside another vehicle.
- Give motorcycles a full lane and adequate following space.
Freeways & Large Vehicles
Use the acceleration lane to approach freeway speed, merge into a safe gap, and yield to freeway traffic. If you miss an exit, continue to the next one—never back up.
- Keep right except when passing and return safely afterward.
- Large trucks have larger blind spots, longer stopping distances, and wider turns.
- Never squeeze to the right of a truck making a right turn.
Weather, Night & Mountains
Rain, snow, ice, fog, and mountain roads reduce traction and visibility. Slow down, add following distance, make smooth inputs, and keep lights and tires in good condition.
- Use low beams in fog and dim high beams for approaching traffic.
- If hydroplaning, ease off the accelerator and avoid hard braking or steering.
- Use a lower gear on long downgrades to reduce brake overheating.
Pedestrians, Bicycles & School Buses
Drivers must yield to pedestrians in crosswalks and at intersections, with special care for children, older adults, and people using a white cane or guide dog.
- Give bicyclists and e-bike riders at least three feet when passing.
- Without a physical median, a school bus displaying red lights generally requires both directions to stop.
- Check sidewalks, bike lanes, and blind spots before turning.
Impairment & Distraction
Alcohol, cannabis, prescription medicine, and other drugs can impair reaction, judgment, and coordination. A regular driver may be DUI at 0.08% BAC, while lower levels can still be unlawful.
- Do not read or send messages while driving.
- Fatigue reduces attention and reaction time.
- Arrange a sober driver or another way home in advance.
Emergencies & Crashes
When an emergency vehicle approaches from behind, pull safely to the right and stop. Near a stopped roadside vehicle displaying warning lights, move over when safe or slow as required.
- During a blowout, hold the wheel firmly and ease off the accelerator.
- After a crash, stop, assist injured people, exchange information, and report as required.
- If safely operable, move vehicles out of traffic to reduce secondary crashes.
Parking & Vehicle Safety
Check traffic and signal before parking, then set the parking brake. Point wheels toward the curb downhill and away from the curb uphill.
- Do not block traffic, driveways, fire hydrants, or accessible spaces.
- Turn off the engine and take the keys before leaving.
- Every occupant should use the restraint appropriate for age and size.
